CHAPTER 13

Itold Winks I'd gone to Fetching Celebrations before stopping by the Hotel. I told her how Trisha disclosed info on Jasmine's ex-husband.

"So, Jasmine was going through a messy divorce with a guy that wanted all her money? Case closed, right? Isn't it typically the ex-spouse when these sorts of things happen?"

"Unfortunately, Winks, I think the police will need concrete evidence. Just because someone's going through a messy divorce doesn't mean it's the classic scenario of murder for money."

Winks frowned. "You're right, of course." She put a finger to her chin in thought. "I'm guessing the next step is to get more information about this ex-husband?"

“Bingo," I said, wriggling my eyebrows mischievously. "Exactly what I was thinking."

Winks checked the time on her phone, which I noticed was covered with decals in the shape of pizza slices and mushrooms, a nod to her love of cooking. I smiled to myself. I had covered my phone in cute cupcake and dog bone decals. "I've got another twenty minutes before I've got to get back for a meeting with my staff," Winks said. She scooted her chair beside me.

"Now, let's do a little searching, shall we?" She opened the browser on her phone and typed in Marc's first and last name. "Is this the guy?" she asked, turning her phone screen toward me so I could see the picture she'd pulled up. It was the main picture on his business's social media page. He was wearing a bright yellow suit with a green plaid pattern crisscrossing over both the jacket and pants.

"Yep," I confirmed, grimacing at the atrocity of his outfit. At some point in his career, Marc had decided that 70s-inspired leisure suits would be his "thing." Every time his commercial came on TV, he was wearing one of his signature multi-colored outfits, with clashing colors that made you question the resolution on your screen.

"Let's be happy he chose a career in bail bonds rather than fashion," Winks said with a laugh. And that's a lot coming from me. You know I love loud patterns, and I'm never afraid to experiment with weird clothing. But that suit's pretty darn bad."

"If you'd grown up here in Glenwood Falls, you'd cringe whenever you saw someone in a bright suit. Whenever I see a suit like his, all I can think is, 'Here for everything bail bond, so say bye to more jail time!_'" The poorly rhymed jingle was an ear-worm that had infiltrated the general public's consciousness for decades.

"Let's be thankful I grew up in the Bronx," Winks said with a shudder. "Anyway, this is interesting," she said, pointing to something on the social media page.

I peered over her shoulder to get a better view. "What do you mean?"

"That's not Jasmine in this picture, right? If so, she'd had extensive plastic surgery to change her face, dyed her hair auburn, and grew four inches taller." She pointed to a bikini-clad woman Marc had his arm around at the beach.

"Definitely not. It must be a new girlfriend.
